CELEBRATING SAMBURU TRIBE,CULTURE AND TRADITIONS .

this was during my adventures during the 29th Edition of the 2018 camel derby at Yare Grounds, Maralal, in Samburu county.

Camel Derby is an annual event, always held mid year on the outskirts of Maralal town.

It is a local as well social platform for the Samburu community as well as all neighboring communities to come interact, socialize and showcase various of their cultures and traditions.

It is a way of preserving culture among the Samburu people since the platform acts as a way of passing knowledge to the young and current generations.

Various songs and dances are performed, traditional games played by our elders and ancestors are showcased and they further go ahead to build huts from scratch. This huts are built step by step not only by the Samburu community but also by the Turkana, Rendille, Borana and Maasai among many.

Personally i had a wonderful experience. You should to join me sometime on being a modern nomad traveller!!!

EMOTIONS

Most of you my fans and family asked me why am I biased.Where is the ladies side of the traditional Samburu wedding…?

Well here is the women’s side,it was emotional because their own daughter was leaving their family to go join another. Women sang various emotional songs that really brought out what they felt in their hearts.

I myself became too emotional as well but since I had to capture the moment I had to brace myself to the task right ahead of me.

LAILELEK

After a cow(enkiteng’) is slaughtered in a traditional Samburu wedding, the cow’s part that contains its hooves (lailelek)is taken by an elder who breaks it so as to access the bone marrow(entolit) and gives it to a young boy. Who then uses a stick to eat the bone marrow which is known to be nutritious.

KELVIN LEMANTAAN A HERO AMONG HIS LOCAL COMMUNITY

I have met and interacted with him on several occasions,at his own home while going through a junior elder initiation, during adventures and safaris and more so Samburu traditional ceremonies as well as traditions.

His kindness and love for family as well as sense of community intrigued me. In his own home in Samburu county he supports women to fetch water over long distances,he helps the less fortunate in his community,he takes responsibility to rush women, children and anyone in need of a hospital. The most he did this year was to help build a nusery school for young kids around his home, this is because there is no governmental development in his area. It is neglected.

Meet Kelvin Lemantaan,a professional safari guide from KPSGA, owns and manages Sambururiversidecamp, Sinteti hotel&cafe, owns and operates Lemakenya company limited that deals with Construction works, building works, Water works and supply of livestock and farm goods.

He is a Peace lover and also Partners with Wilderexprience based on basis of tourism and adventures.

LENAINO,PRESIDENT OF OVER 10,000 WARRIORS

This is Lenaino, the president of one of the ageset belonging to the Lorukushu clan.He is incharge for over 10,000 morans, right from Samburu to Laikipia all the way to Marsabit. He is a well respected man and very simple in nature. His dressed like this because it was his wedding day at Lekuru, Samburu county.

One major thing I learnt is for a man like him to marry it ain’t easy since culture and traditions are involved. History of a girls family right from her parents to grandparents and great grandparents is followed. Let’s say a girl’s lineage is well scrutinized to avoid any defects such as gravious sins that might have been committed before her or any curse whatsoever. This day he married a girl whom was considered pure after all investigations were done.

SAMBURU AND MAASAI WARRIORS/MORANS.

On this day I encountered hundreds of Samburu Morans who had come in order of their ageset President’s (launoni) wedding. Their was a lot of singing by the Morans. The Morans/warriors are of great importance to both the maasai and Samburu cultures. They protect their animals from predators both humans and wildlife, they provide security for their families and the entire community and they also build Kraals.

They all belong to different age sets depending on the period that each individual was circumcised. This warriors were from the Lorukushu clan . #samburucounty #samburupeople #samburu #ourculture #traditions #malihadventures 📸🎥 @laissamalih
